I (heart) I (heart) Huckabees. Whimsy, maybe when Mark Wahlberg was riding his bike, but overall I thought it was absurdist fun that made you think. I bet Woody Allen loved it. I thought Dustin Hoffman and Lilly Tomlin were hilarious. Jason Schwartman is just wierd and the roles he has taken on have made him someone that will draw me to the film just because he's in it. The high concept stuff was compelling. It was pretentious at times but there is no way that almost every line was not thought of and spoken with tounge firmly in cheek. I think it took chances. I wish there were more like it.
Agreed that it took chances, agreed that I would rather see something like I(h)H than 90 percent of the hollywood formulaic stuff out there.
Speaking of which, didn't I just type the formula for magnesium or something?
For example: the Wedding Crashers. Just saw it, it was funny. But kinda dumb, and I felt let down at the end. Mindless entertainment, with an emphasis on mindless.
But Huckabees was not a great movie in my book. Just had the feel of something or someone trying to hard. Loved Wahlberg's character in it though. MW is a one-dimensional actor but it's a great dimension.
If it's any consolation, Mpls' City Pages voted it the best movie of that year (last?). Said it was a searing commentary on consumerist society or something. Uh huh.
My worst list would surely include Until the End of the World by Win Wenders and any David Lynch movie after Blue Velvet. But even BV is wildly over rated.
Anton, what did you think of Mullholland Drive (sp?)?
At the time, I was kind of outraged, felt like DL was just jerking the viewer around. But after talking to a lot of people about it, I have come to consider the point that we was jerking us around in a very artful, creative way that points out how all movies basically play with our expectations and emotions. In any case, it's one I would like to see again to see if it sits better with me.
But overall, I think DL is overrated. Does a nice weather report, though.
And has anyone seen The Brown Bunny? That one got some really good reviews.

On my top ten list of worst movies of all time, there is only one title: "Moulin Rouge"
IFs
So you (heart)(slash) Huckabees?
Interesting. I thought that was another film with a high whimsy level.
I didn't hate it, but I thought it was a Wes Anderson/Charlie Kaufman pretender...

And let's not forget The Piano! Yikes!
Jake and I used to watch Moulin Rouge all the time. I think he might be thinking about the other team.
